The Screaming Goats Collective

Who are we?

Co-creators Léda Davies and Jed Tomlinson have been at the forefront of devised theatre in Canada for over a decade and created The Screaming Goats Collective in 2016 with the mission of artfully combining theatre and circus mediums into provocative, new, interdisciplinary performances.

Together they have provided instructional seminars and workshops on topics related to circus, theatre and performance creation such as the “Get Off Your @ss Creation Workshop” and “Discovering Clown Through Impulse” as a means to bridge the gap between Eastern and Western Canadian performing art communities.

Their inaugural touring production Persephone Bound, produced in partnership with Théâtre Imago, is a contemporary adaptation of the Greek Myth of Persephone, that uses stunning poetry, percussion and aerial circus work to tell the story of a young woman’s courage and pain as she navigates the complexities of speaking out about surviving sexual assault. The world premier took place in Montreal in 2019, and was nominated for five Montreal English Theatre Awards, winning Outstanding Lighting Design (Martin Sirois) & Outstanding Contribution to Theatre (Aerial Circus Team).  In 2020 the project was developed into a digital theatre hybrid with the intension of expanding the project’s outreach and continuing its legacy during and beyond the COVID-19 pandemic.

Now, based out of Moh'kins'tsis (Calgary, Alberta), with Leda Davies as the artistic lead, the company continues to share their practices and performances with both Eastern and Western Canadian performing art communities.

In order to break from traditional hegemonies, and move towards a greater sense of community and inclusion, The Screaming Goats Collective has adapted the term “collective” to encompass any and all participants from past, present and future projects.

Commitment- 35//50

In August 2020, in response to the Black Lives Matter movement and acknowledging the realities within the arts sector due to COVID-19, a group of artists in Alberta created the 35//50 Initiative. This initiative asks organizations to commit to representing Calgary's civic landscape by hiring a minimum of 35% BIPOC & 50% female and non-binary folks in paid, professional positions by 2025.

We are grateful to these artists for leading this initiative and are thankful for the opportunity to challenge systems of oppression, use our voice to create change in our community and move toward a theatrical landscape built upon equality and justice.

Upholding our values of activism, inclusion, community, and leadership, we acknowledge that as of 2021, the Screaming Goat Collective’s racial and gender representation is as follows:

Artists — 17% BIPOC, 68% Female/non-binary

Board — 60% BIPOC, 80% Female/non-binary

Staff — 0% BIPOC, 100% Female/non-binary

We understand that these statistics do not yet reflect the representation within our city.  To hold ourselves accountable to this promise we aim to:

The Screaming Goats Collective respectfully acknowledges they gather and create on the land called "Moh'kins'tsis", the traditional territories of the people of the Treaty 7 region in Southern Alberta, which includes the Blackfoot Confederacy (comprising the Siksika, Piikani, and Kainai First Nations), as well as the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda (including the Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Wesley First Nations).Southern Alberta is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region 3.
